Dr. Riyad Al-Sa'egh, a consultant on kidney diseases and kidney transplant at the hospital, said: "A medical team succeeded today in conducting the first kidney transplant surgery for a patient aged thirty-three years donated by his brother, who is three years younger, both from Karbala. The medical team was headed by the liver and kidney Specialist; the Iraqi doctor expatriate in America, Dr. As'ad Abd 'Aoun, with the participation of an Iraqi specialist medical and nursing staff under our supervision.

Al-Sa'egh added: "This operation is the first of its kind carried out at the Al-Kafeel Specialist Hospital. We have prepared for it in an intensive and pre-determined manner and we have provided all the requirements for its success. The health status of the patient and his donor brother is now stable after the operation and they left the intensive care unit after 24 hours. The donator might leave the hospital soon and few days later his brother for whom the kidney was transplanted."

Al-Sa'egh revealed that "preparations are underway for another kidney transplant for a 23-year-old patient whose 50-year-old father will donate one of his kidneys. A third patient will be given a kidney by his thirty year old daughter."
